Description
Holly Berkley Fletcher attempts to unmask the myths of white evangelicalism in her book, The Missionary Kids. She focuses on the trauma and abuse that many white missionary kids have gone through because of their parents’ calling to the mission field. Her main point in this book seems to be that missions is not an actual calling and that you should never go on the mission field if you have children.
There are things I 100% agree with in this book, but fundamentally I disagree with most of it. Being married to an MK who graduated from the same school as well as having in-laws who worked there and interacting with multiple people who went there or worked there, I have heard positive stories and experiences. It seemed like the author only took a sample of MKs that fit her data. As someone who no longer claims to believe in God, it’s understandable that she would not understand the calling of Matthew 10:27-29. People are abused and traumatized in America as well, not just in other countries. There is so much more I could say, but if you want to start some serious conversations, read this book.
