The Worst Journey in the World, Volume 1: Making Our Easting Down: The Graphic Novel

An epic true recount of a tragic expedition taken to the South Pole was written by Apsley Cherry-Garrod more than a century ago, and this timeless breathtaking account has mesmerized and enthralled readers over the years. Hoping to make this gripping tale more accessible to current readers, animator Sarah Airriess decided to animate and translate this story into a graphic novel. Her opening illustrations depict the main characters of this voyage headed by Captain Robert Scott, who hoped to be recognized as the first officer to reach the South Pole. Volume one of this series pictures the story of the venture initiated from Wales as it proceeds down to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, and the book stops when it finally reaches Antarctica. Vividly colored scenes display the crew’s camaraderie, the problems posed by the poorly crafted whaler ship, the storms encountered, the provisions packed aboard, and many more pictorial details. Scant text is provided, and the myriad of detailed, colorful illustrations attempt to translate the dramatic story inherent in this adventure. While the many drawn scenes attempt to capture the adventure, I still reverted to my memory of the written impressions and emotions from the book itself. I assume Volume Two will continue the saga of the tragic foray into Antarctica.
