Whose Tree Is This?: Poems About the Mighty Oak and Its Companions

An oak tree is much more than simply a big plant. It is a community, a home to a wide variety of animals — mammals, birds, and insects. Youngsters will be familiar with many of the animals featured, but a few will be surprises. The book opens with a poem about the tree and what it has to offer for creatures great and small. This is followed by spreads, each dedicated to one or two of the old oak’s denizens. Each spread has a poem followed by an informational paragraph about the creature. The poems are cute, mostly free verse, and easy for little ones, ages 2 to 4, to understand. The informational paragraph is conversational and clearly designed for children 5 to 7. Each spread also has a charming illustration in bright colors showing the creature (and often some other creatures) in the oak tree. While the illustrations are pretty, they are somewhat abstract, not detailed, and cannot be used to identify the animals. This is a pretty book and will make a nice addition to any library, home, or classroom. Youngsters will enjoy it.
