Are You a Cat?

A dog meets a cat and asks her “Are you a Cat?” The cat asks him why the dog wants to know, to which he replies, “because dogs chase cats.” The cat, not wanting to be chased by the dog, tells the dog she is not a cat and a journey of trying to convince the dog of all the other things she is begins. Eventually, the cat tells the dog she is really a cat, and then she decides to chase a mouse. The mouse, not wanting to be chased, starts the journey all over again.

My three- and six-year-old loved this book. They wanted to read it over and over again because they thought the text was so funny. They love the banter back and forth between the dog and cat and then like the surprise ending of what the mouse says it is at the end.

The text in the book is the rock star by far. It is funny and flows so well. I appreciate the great creativity in the words.

The illustrations were pretty sparse, which I feel works for this book because of the interactive text. The dog and cat are a unique shape, making the pictures interesting to look at even though they are very similar. My favorite page was when the cat tries to convince the dog she’s a butterfly and attempts to sit on the flower.

I recommend this book for three- to eight-year-olds.
