The Liar’s Crown (Dominions, 1)

Meren and Tabra are twins in a kingdom where the firstborn rules and the second takes her place at dangerous times or in the event of her death. King Eidolon has been killing their kingdom’s queens for years, but no one knows because her replacement immediately took her place. Their grandmother dies, meaning Tabra will be crowned, and Eidolon has just announced he will be there for the coronation. Meren decides that it would be safest for her to take Tabra’s place, and as she’s on the way, she’s kidnapped by a shadowy force. Little does this Shadowraith know that Meren wears The Liar’s Crow. Meren will have to do everything in her power to save her sister and her kingdom.

This was a hard book to explain and summarize. There is a lot going on here. It’s pretty typical YA fairytale fare, with the princess falling in love with the bad guy because only her love can change him. Otherwise, there is magic, princesses, curses, shadows, and world-building, all of which could have been more developed instead of focusing so much on the romance. Overall, if you enjoy YA fantasy, more than likely, you will enjoy this.
